Amagansett, founded in 1680, is a hamlet and a census-designated place in Suffolk County, New York on the South Shore of Long Island. As of the United States 2000 Census, the hamlet population was 1,067. The area is sometimes referred to as Skimhampton. However this specifically refers to the area south of the Montauk Highway along Skimhampton Road. The artist Childe Hassam, who was living on Egypt Lane in East Hampton village painted the area during the late 1800s and early 1900s. Portions of Skimhampton and the area on the northwest side of Amagansett show up in the United States Census census designated place of East Hampton North, New York.
